Bio-leather, or leather tanned with biodegradable vegetable oils, is a natural and ecological alternative. Vegetable tanning is a method of leather production that has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, leather is tanned with water-soluble vegetable oils and tannins derived from trees. A color paste made from biodegradable vegetable oils and tannins is rubbed by hand onto the leather hide, making each hide unique. This also makes each bag unique.
The surface of the leather develops a beautiful patina, showing the marks and lines of life that come with the years. Scratches and lines that appear with use can be smoothed out slightly by rubbing them with your fingertips. The natural oils from your skin act as a smoothing agent.
Bio-leather is initially a little stiff, but it softens with use to become comfortable. Bio-leather is generally more expensive than chrome-tanned leather because the vegetable tanning process is largely handcrafted and takes about two months. Vegetable-tanned leather is a more ecological, durable and higher quality option, and it only gets better with use. Due to its durability, it offers good value for money and is a classic that never goes out of style.
