Materials, manufacturing and transportation
Utua leather products are made from surplus materials from food production. The hides are processed in a modern factory in Italy. Sustainable design, leather as a material and high-quality sewing make Utua products long-lasting, which reduces their carbon footprint. Leather is manufactured in Italy in accordance with the ISO14001:2015 environmental certificate and the ISO9001:2015 quality certificate. The hides come mainly from the Nordic countries.
Utua bags are sewn in a small family-owned atelier in Greece. The production is done by hand, so only small batches of bags are made at a time. Utua clothing is made in a Finnish-owned factory in Portugal from GOTS-certified cotton and mulesing-free merino wool.
We take into account material efficiency and lifespan optimization right from the design stage of our bags and clothing. The products are manufactured within the EU, so transportation distances are shorter than when imported from further afield.
Ethical and ecological values are important criteria when choosing our partners.
We want the manufacturing of our products to not burden the environment, so modern processes in factories, such as water purification, are important to us. We also require that our partners' employees have good and safe working conditions.
When selecting and monitoring subcontractors, we consider it important that they operate in accordance with applicable legislation and certificates in all their activities. We know our partners personally and can guarantee both the ethics of their operations and the legacy of professional craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
Design
Utua products are designed in Finland. Our design office, located in the middle of idyllic Vanhaa Raahe, is home to a design team responsible for designing Utua's leather bags, clothing, accessories and jewelry.
Utua's roots are deep in the North Ostrobothnian landscape and spiritual life, and this is reflected in both our values and our everyday work. Finnish nature and history are strongly present in the design of our products. Historical stories have given rise to, for example, the Archipelago and Everyday Heroes collections. It is important to us to create products that last over time, save nature and are dear to the user.
Store and design office
The heart of Utua can be found in the store/showroom located in the old town of Raahe. Our design team works in the old Langi main building, where the story of all Utua products begins.
